PJ’s Tavern in Cresson, PA Since 1964
The Story of PJ’s Tavern
From Scrap to Staple

The Beginning – 1964
PJ’s Tavern opened its doors in 1964 on Admiral Peary Hwy in Cresson, PA. What started as a neighborhood bar quickly became something more. A place where locals gathered, regulars became family, and the food kept people coming back week after week.
The Wings
In 1968, PJ Sloan and his first cook, Leo Vermeulin, did something no one else was doing. They went to local stores and markets and bought up chicken wings — at a time when most places considered them scrap and threw them away. PJ and Leo saw something different.
Together they developed a recipe and signature breading that would go on to become the most beloved item on the menu. When PJ’s first offered wings, they sold for five cents apiece, handed over in a paper bag to go.
They still come in a paper bag today.
Leo spent years in that kitchen, and the recipe he and PJ created in 1968 has never been changed. Not once. What they built together that year is still served every single week to generations of customers who grew up on the same flavor their parents and grandparents loved.

Over 60 Years Later
PJ’s Tavern is still right here on Admiral Peary Hwy, still serving Cresson and the surrounding communities. The menu has grown. The faces behind the bar have changed. But the things that made PJ’s what it is, the wings, the paper bag, the no-fuss comfort food, the neighborhood feel -those have never moved.
Some things never change. We think that’s worth something.
